2014 has been declared by the UN as the International Year of Family Farming (IYFF).
The goal of IYFF 2014 is to put family agriculture at the center of agricultural, environmental and social policy considerations in national agendas, recognizing the gaps and opportunities to promote a change in the direction towards a more equitable and balanced development path.
IYFF 2014 will encourage a broad discussion and cooperation at national, regional and global levels to raise awareness and understanding of the challenges faced by smallholders and help to identify effective tools able to support family farmers.
Since 2011, Terrasud has organised the annual OLIO DI FAMGLIA competition;
The objectives and themes that the UN has highlighted for the International Year of Family Agriculture International Year of Family Farming are the same as we already expressed in the first edition of 2011. Our intention in the fourth edition, which will start in September 2014, is to reiterate and reaffirm the importance of family farming in Italy and also expand the competition to olive growers around the Mediterranean.
The competition is open to families and all citizens who produce extra virgin olive oil in the countries bordering on the Mediterranean.
The event aims to enhance the production of extra virgin olive oil through small family agricultural production.
The model of family farming is an agricultural production system centered on the work and abilities of families who live and work on the land. This model, better than others, allows us to ensure the sustainable use of resources and energy and to promote sustainable agriculture and nutrition related to the specificity and diversity of the local environment.
Within the family agriculture of Italy and of other countries bordering the Mediterranean, we have family olive production; extra virgin olive oil produced by family farmers is a form of production mainly or exclusively for self-consumption purposes.
From these brief considerations, farmers and their families in fact play an important economic, social and environmental role, giving rise to the desire to shine a light on this sector of olive oil production.
The oils that will participate in the competition will be judged by a panel of experts who will take into account both chemical analyses and organoleptic analyses.
As well as identifying the best extra virgin olive oil, the objective is to give a lot of useful information to growers in order to improve their own oil and to make their work more fruitful.
As part of the programme, Olio di Famglia will organize a photographic exhibition. Together with their oil samples, participants are invited to send a photograph which shows images that tell the story of their olive-growing landscape, the family, and of olive oil.
